MBB: #18 Mats Comeback Bid Falls Short

DOUGLAS, Ariz. – Down by 13 at the half and 21 midway through the second period proved too much for #18 Arizona Western (7-2 overall, 6-2 ACCAC) to overcome in Saturday’s 82-72 road loss to the Cochise Apaches (3-2 overall, 3-1 ACCAC).

The Apaches jumped on Arizona Western from the start, smothering the Matador shooters and the glass en route to a 42-29 lead at the break.

Four different Apaches scored in double figures including Brian Rios who connected on five of eleven three-point attempts.

The Cochise lead swelled to as much as 21 midway through the second half.

The Matadors had their counter in the second half behind career high performances from freshmen Malik Salahuddin (30 pts) and Stanley Harley (17 pts).

Arizona Western trimmed the deficit to 6pts with just under five minutes to play.

Arizona Western also shot just 12-21 (57%) from the charity stripe while Cochise capitalized on all 25 of the Matador fouls, shooting 21-32 at the line (65%).

Cochise outrebounded AWC 51-37.

Arizona Western will continue its road swing with a Friday afternoon trip to Community Christian College at 4:00pm.

Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma.
