YUMA, Ariz. – After a strong start to the season, the Arizona Western College men’s basketball team climbed to the 18th spot in the latest NJCAA poll. In the preseason poll, Arizona Western started 23rd.
The Mats have started the season 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference. Last week, Arizona Western topped South Mountain 98-88 with six players scoring at least 10 points. The Matadors have scored at least 90 points in both conference games after pounding the offensive glass. The Mats grabbed 25 offensive rebounds at Eastern Arizona and 19 offensive boards in the win over South Mountain.
As a team, Arizona Western is averaging 83 points per game. The Mats have three players averaging in double figures. Freshman Andre Jones leads the team with 15.8 points per game and 4.6 rebounds per game. Torin Webb averages 11.7 points per game, and Brandon McGhee adds 10.6 points per game along with a team-leading 3.1 assists per game. McGhee was named the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Player of the Week after the first week of the regular season.
This week, Arizona Western has a huge matchup at Cochise College (7-1 overall, 2-1 ACCAC). Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm, and the game will be broadcast on 560 AM KBLU.
Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma. AWC leads the state in enrollment growth over the past 10 years and handed out more than 2,400 certificates and degrees in 2015-16.
