Matadors storm back for 79-78 overtime win at Pima
YUMA, AZ - The Arizona Western Matadors (5-2) outscored Pima (4-1) 18-7 over the final minutes of regulation and in overtime to open region play with a 79-78 win.
The Matadors trailed 71-61 with just over two minutes to play before putting together a run to send the game to overtime. Najeeb Muhammad hit a three-pointer with one second left on the clock to tie the game. Muhammad finished the game with 15 points while dishing out five assists.
Arizona Western and Pima traded baskets in the overtime period but the Matadors were able to hang on after Pima's last shot attempted clanged off the front iron, giving the Matadors their second consecutive win.
Yaxel Lendeborg led the Matadors with 16 points and 16 rebounds, finishing with his third double-double of the season. As a team, the Matadors were able to outrebound the Aztecs 50-38. Mojus Mojus finished the game with 15 points, matching Muhammad as the team's second-leading scorer while also collecting five rebounds.
Nate Duda was the Matadors' fourth player in double-figures, finishing with 13 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Jimmy Sorunke also finished the game with eight rebounds.
The Matadors return home on Saturday, November 20 when they host Eastern Arizona at 4:00 pm. Arizona Western will be inducting all-time wins leader Kelly Green into the hall of fame.
