Keep A Lead
SELLS, AZ – Cameron Young scored the first bucket of the night, and the 24th ranked Arizona Western College Matador men’s basketball team led from start to finish against Tohono O’odham Community College. The Matadors won 92-74 on Wednesday night in Sells, Arizona and have now won six straight.
Young hit the first shot, but Stefan Rosic and Seth Guillory keyed the Matador offense through the early part of the first half. Both hit two three’s, and Young added another three, and the Matadors built a 25-16 lead on the five three’s. Guillory finished with 10 points in the half and 15 for the game to go along with seven assists, three rebounds and three steals. Rosic scored eight in the first half and finished with 10 points.
Tohono O’odham upped the pressure, and the full court press helped the Jegos close the gap down to 27-25 after Devin White hit his second three of the first half with five minutes to go until halftime.
Matador forward Jamaree Strickland took over and was unstoppable in the post. The 6’10 sophomore used both power and finesse to score nine of his team’s next 12 points to keep the Matadors in front 39-35 at the half. Strickland finished the game with 11 points, six rebounds and three blocks.
After halftime, the Matadors slammed the door shut. A 7-0 spurt in the first two minutes of the second half helped push the lead back to double figures.
Young helped push the lead to 20 as he poured in 13 points after halftime. He led the Matadors with 18 for the evening.
Each time Tohono O’odham tried to cut into the lead, the Matadors had an answer, and the Matadors led by double figures for the rest of the game.
Matador freshman guard Chris Famous finished with five points, 10 rebounds and six assists.
Devin White led Tohono O’odham with 15 points, while Dominic Eason added 13.
The Matadors improved to 10-1 overall and 4-0 in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference. Tohono O’odham dropped to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in the ACCAC.
Arizona Western heads home to host Cochise College on Saturday evening. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
