Hargrove leads Matadors to Region I title game with 85-56 win over Eastern

YUMA, AZ – The Arizona Western College Matadors (26-4) punched their ticket to the Region I title game, beating Eastern Arizona (12-18) 85-56 on Saturday night at the House Gymnasium.
Marquis Hargrove made his third career start on Saturday night and scored a career-high 22 points to help the Matadors advance to the Region I championship game.
Nate Duda scored eight of the Matadors' first 20 points, putting the Matadors up 20-10 with a layup from the right side. Mojus Mojus drained a triple to help the Mats open up a 25-12 lead early in the first half.
Duda finished with 19 points, finishing as the game’s second-leading scorer while Mojus finished as the Matadors’ third-leading scorer with 17 points.
The Matadors used a 9-0 run to open their largest lead of the first half, leading the Gila Monsters 31-12 halfway through the first half before Eastern Arizona cut the Matadors' lead to nine at 43-34 before Najeeb Muhammad drained his fourth triple of the game to give the Matadors a 46-34 lead at the break.
Muhammad scored all 12 of his points in the first half, going 4-for-7 from beyond the three-point line in the win.
The Matadors went on a 15-0 run to push the lead to 61-37 after the Gila Monsters cut the Matadors’ lead to 46-37.
Hargrove helped put the game away, scoring 12 of his 22 points in the second half.
The Matadors will host the Region I championship game on Monday, February 28 at 7:00 pm against the No. 2 seed Cochise at the House Gymnasium. Tickets will be available for purchase at the door, no passes will be accepted.
