In a game marked by lead changes, clutch plays and a spirited rivalry atmosphere, the Matadors forced overtime but ultimately came up short.
The Matadors and Gila Monsters traded baskets throughout a tightly contested first half, with Arizona Western edging ahead 43-41 at the break. The intensity only rose in the second half as both teams responded to each run. Eastern Arizona managed to rally late, but Arizona Western refused to yield—Marsai Mason calmly sank two critical free throws with 48 seconds left to force overtime, tying the game at 77-77.
In the extra period, Mason put the Matadors in front with a three-pointer, but Eastern Arizona answered with a key run of its own. The visitors claimed a two-possession lead in the final minute on a Ryan Hunt jumper, then sealed the win at the line. The game featured six ties, four lead changes and a playoff-like energy from both squads.
Marsai Mason delivered a dominant all-around performance, pouring in a career high 26 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and recording a game-high five blocks on 7-of-16 shooting and 10-of-14 from the free-throw line.
