YUMA, Ariz. – A shutout over the weekend may have helped the Arizona Western football team in the latest NJCAA poll. The Mats are second for the third week in a row, but the distance to first place Iowa Western shrank.
AWC (7-0) garnered two first-place votes this week and totaled 189.09 points once the poll committee vote and the computer rankings were combined together. The Mats are only seven points behind first place Iowa Western (8-1, seven first place votes, 196.34 points) after trailing by almost 18 last week. Northwest Mississippi (7-1, 177.48 points) dropped to fourth and saw East Mississippi (8-1, 189.00 points) hop past them for third despite beating EMCC two weekends ago. Independence (7-1, 161.95) is fifth.
The Mats shut out Glendale 26-0 behind a dominant ground game and smothering defense. The Mats piled up 343 rushing yards while only surrendering 189 total yards of offense to GCC.
AWC is one of three ranked teams in the Western States Football League. Snow moved up to ninth this week, and Scottsdale dropped down to 18th. Mesa is also receiving votes.
The Mats host Mesa this weekend at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets are only $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and military members. Children 12 and under and AWC students and staff (with current school ID) get in for FREE!
