YUMA, Ariz. – Despite a loss, the Arizona Western College football team stayed in the NJCAA Top 20 in the most recent poll. The Mats (5-3 overall, 3-2 Western States Football League) are 17th. East Mississippi, Garden City, Iowa Western, Hutchinson and Northwest Mississippi make up the top five.
The Mats lost 31-10 to Snow on Saturday after seeing a three-point halftime lead eliminated in the third quarter. A fumble on a 50-50 play in the third quarter turned the tide in a close game. The Mats gained 408 yards of offense, but three turnovers hurt promising drives.
AWC has been as high as third and as low as 19th in the polls this season. The Mats are one of four ranked teams from the WSFL. Snow is still in eighth. Pima moved up to 11th after beating Eastern Arizona, who dropped to 14th.
The Mats are headed to Eastern Arizona this week. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast on 560 AM KBLU.
Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma.
