YUMA, Ariz. – Three football teams shuffled around in the top five of the latest NJCAA poll, but Arizona Western stayed put in the second spot. The Mats had 192.61 points this week along with one first place vote, and first-place Iowa Western had eight first place votes and 210 points. Northwest Mississippi (179.24 points), Blinn (178.02 points) and East Mississippi (172.7 points) round out the top five.
The Mats (6-0 overall, 4-0 Western States Football League) beat Pima 28-23 in a tight game in Yuma. Bryce Beekman picked off three passes in the win and was named the WSFL Defensive Player of the Week, and the Matadors grabbed seven interceptions total in the game.
AWC is the only unbeaten team left in the top 16 in the NJCAA poll, and the Mats are atop the WSFL standings with three games left to play. The Mats have been in the NJCAA top five all season and were second place last week.
Two other teams from the WSFL are in the top 20. Snow moved up one spot to 10th, and Scottsdale moved up one spot to 11th.
AWC heads to Glendale Community College on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on 560 AM KBLU.
Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma. AWC leads the state in enrollment growth over the past 10 years and handed out more than 2,300 certificates and degrees in 2016-17.
