YUMA, Ariz. – For the second straight season, the Arizona Western football team wrapped up the regular season undefeated, and the Mats (9-0 overall, 7-0 Western States Football League) also finished as the second-ranked team in the final regular season NJCAA poll. AWC dominated Scottsdale in a 66-14 win to claim a second straight WSFL title and sixth time under head coach Tom Minnick.
AWC was second for the fifth straight week with 189.72 points and one first place vote. The top three stayed the same as East Mississippi (10-1 overall, 201.00 points, three first place votes) was first and Iowa Western (10-1 overall, 182.90 points, five first place votes) stayed third. Northeastern Oklahoma A&M (9-2 overall, 159.71 points) was fourth, and Northwest Mississippi (8-2 overall, 152.41 points) was fifth.
The Mats have been a top five team all season. AWC started the year as the number one team before dropping to fifth once the computer rankings were factored in with the poll committee votes. The Mats have moved back up to second and have stayed there.
Snow is the only other ranked team from the WSFL. The Badgers (9-1 overall, 140.3 points) moved up two spots to sixth.
With the regular season finished, the Mats are waiting for bowl bids. Bowl bids cannot be announced until tomorrow, Tuesday, at noon CST per NJCAA rules.
Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma. AWC leads the state in enrollment growth over the past 10 years and handed out more than 2,300 certificates and degrees in 2016-17.
