YUMA, Ariz. – Bryce Beekman and the Arizona Western secondary terrorized Pima quarterback KC Moore on Saturday by picking off seven passes. Beekman led the way with three of them and was named the Western States Football League and NJCAA Defensive Player of the Week after his best game of the season.
Beekman’s third and final pick proved to be a game clincher in the 28-23 win. After Pima had recovered an onside kick and sat just outside the 20-yard line, Beekman picked off Moore in the end zone to secure the win for the Mats.
All three of the freshman’s interceptions came after halftime, and he now has five total on the season. Beekman added four tackles as well. On the year, Beekman has 20 tackles, half a tackle for loss and one pass breakup in addition to his five picks.
Beekman is the second Matador defensive player to be named the WSFL Defensive Player of the Week this season. Roy Yancey picked up the honor at the beginning of September. Bryce Perkins and Greg Bell III have both earned the weekly honors on the offensive side of the ball this season. Gabriel Claudio was named the WSFL Special Teams Player of the Week after team’s win over Snow.
The second-ranked Mats are headed to Glendale Community College on Saturday, October 28 at 7:00 p.m. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast on 560 AM KBLU, and the pregame show goes live at 6:50 p.m.
