YUMA, Ariz. – As Matador Athletics continues to write new chapters on the field and in the gym, it’s the chapters they are completing in the classroom that are establishing new standards of academic excellence.
All seven Arizona Western Matador Athletic Teams making NJCAA All-Academic Honors.
That means it is the second straight year all seven Matador teams achieved a combined GPA above 3.0, hitting 3.2 in 2019-2020.
Individually, 79 different student-athletes landed on the Dean’s List this year with 45 total accomplishing the academic feat despite adjusting to the shift in the spring.
38 Matadors qualified for NJCAA All-Academic lists with 8 landing on the first-team, maintaining a cumulative 4.0 GPA for the Academic year.
17 more Matadors landed on the second team with 13 on the third team.
19 different Matadors had a perfect 4.0 this spring in the midst of the pandemic and the move to online classes.
“We are ecstatic that our students achieved this,” says Athletic Director Jerry Smith. “I’m so pleased our students stayed the course and fought thought adverse circumstances this spring, achieving what they need to for their next opportunities.”

Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma.
