Trio of Matadors named All-ACCAC and Region
YUMA, Ariz. - Three Arizona Western College Matadors' baseball players, Joseph Taveras, JC Navarro, and Max Weller were named All-ACCAC and All-Region I.
Taveras was named first-team All-ACCAC and first-team All-Region I after pitching in 13 games this spring, all starts, posting a 9-3 record with a team-leading 2.21 earned run average, striking out 83 batters in 73.1 innings. The sophomore from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic recorded three games of 10 or more strikeouts, including a season-high 13 strikeouts in a complete-game shutout over Pima on February 26.
Navarro was named first-team All-ACCAC and first-team All-Region I after finishing the regular season as the Matadors' leading hitter, batting .395 in 55 games, recording 17 doubles, third-most on the team, and 10 home runs, second-most. The sophomore from Sahuarita, Ariz. drove in 50 runs and put together a pair of multi-homer games, hitting two home runs against Northeastern on February 5 and doing so again on March 30 in a win at Mesa.
Weller was named second-team All-ACCAC and second-team All-Region I after finishing the season as the team's second-leading hitter, batting .384 with 10 doubles, four triples, and six home runs while driving in 39 runs. The sophomore from Valparaiso, Ind. led the team in games played, playing in 56 games, and led the team in walks with 44.
The Matadors open post-season play on Thursday, heading to Douglas, Ariz. to take on Cochise in game one of a best-of-three semi-final series at 2:00 pm.
