YUMA, Ariz. – Spencer Packard helped lead the Arizona Western College baseball team to a 5-0 record last week. The sophomore swung the bat well and hit .588 for the week as AWC won three non-conference games and a doubleheader against GateWay. He was named the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Division I Player of the Week.
Packard went 10-17 at the plate, and he hit safely in all five games. He also drove in seven runs and had at least one RBI in all five games. Plus, he scored eight runs and crossed home plate at least once in every game.
For the season, Packard is third in the conference with a .402 batting average and tied for second with a .519 on-base percentage. He leads AWC with 11 doubles and has added four home runs.
Packard is the second position player for AWC to be named the ACCAC Division I Player of the Week this year. Justin Greene earned the honor back on February 21. Irving Martin was named the ACCAC Division I Pitcher of the Week on February 21 as well.
The Mats (18-8 overall, 8-4 ACCAC) are on the road at the Tucson Invitational Games this week at the Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, AZ. AWC is back at home in Yuma on Tuesday, March 20 to host Chandler-Gilbert Community College. The doubleheader will start at noon that day, and admission is FREE!
Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma. AWC leads the state in enrollment growth over the past 10 years and handed out more than 2,300 certificates and degrees in 2016-17.
