Twin Falls, Idaho. – Two out hits carried the Arizona Western College baseball team in a win-or-go-home game on Friday afternoon. The Mats (48-15) knocked in 11 of their 12 runs in a 12-4, seven inning win over Trinidad State Junior College (47-12) to stay alive in the West District Tournament.

AWC left runners on base through each of the first three innings, but the offense didn’t break through until the fourth. Down 3-0 and with runners on second and third and one out, Snaider Torrealba put the Mats on the board with an RBI groundout to second. Zach Huffins followed with a walk, and Sean Roby looped a line drive to centerfield to score one. Spencer Packard sliced an RBI double to left field to tie the game 3-3.

In the fifth, the Mats again rallied with two outs. Once again, runners were on second and third with two outs. Zach Huffins knocked both home with a line drive single to right field for a 5-3 lead. Roby smashed a two-run homer to left field to put the Mats up by four one batter later.

The Mats rallied again with two outs in the sixth. After a double play emptied the bases, Carlos Arellano singled. It was his third hit of the game. Torrealba walked. Huffins hit a slow roller to short, and the throw to first was wide to score Arellano. Roby swatted his second homer of the game to left field and 22nd of the season for an 11-3 lead. He finished 3-5 with a season-high six RBI and two homers. Packard walked, and Manny Perez smashed a double off the left field wall to score him from first to make it 12-3.

Zach Hansen (6-1) came on to relieve Perez in the first inning, and he was dominant after that. The freshman only allowed one run on a solo homer in the seventh. He struck out five and walked one while giving up five hits in 6.2 innings.

Niko Guzman (7-3) took the loss after allowing four runs on four hits in one inning of work. He walked one.

Trinidad State jumped out to a 3-0 lead after touching up Perez in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded, Ethan Castro hit a single that just stayed fair down the right field line, and Reese Patterson followed it with a double down the line that scored two more. Hansen came on for the Mats and shut it down after that.

Conrado Diaz hit a solo homer in the seventh for Trinidad State for the final tally.

The Mats will play the loser of Southern Idaho and Salt Lake at 7:00 p.m. tonight.
