Matadors in Summer Ball

YUMA, Ariz. – 14 Arizona Western College Matadors baseball players are competing in nine different summer collegiate baseball leagues across North America this summer.

Three Matadors are playing their summer ball in the Northwoods League this summer. JC Navarro will be playing for the Green Bay Rockers this summer. Tyler LeRoy and Noah Marcelo will be teammates this summer, both suiting up for the Duluth Huskies. LeRoy has appeared in 10 games for the Huskies, smacking a pair of doubles and five runs batted in. Marcelo got off to a hot start, being named the Northwoods League’s player of the night on June 1st when the Matadors’ infielder hit a grand slam and drove in seven runs against the Minnesota Mud Puppies. Marcelo is hitting .205 with two doubles and two home runs while driving in 17 runs, in 21 games this summer.

Dylan Edmands and Noah Roberts are both spending their summer in their home country of Canada. Edmands is playing in his hometown of Regina, Saskatchewan for the Regina Red Sox of the Western Canadian Baseball League. The infielder and future Liberty Flame has played in 17 games for his hometown team, doubling three times and driving in a pair of runs. Recently, Edmands went a perfect 2-for-2 in a 6-0 Red Sox win over Sylvan Lake. Roberts is spending his summer in his home province of Ontario, playing for the Guelph Royals of the Intercounty Baseball League.  The freshman catcher has played in 10 games and has driven in five runs, driving in a pair of runs twice over the span of two games. Roberts smacked a home run in a 2-for-4 performance against the Brantford Red Sox on May 28.

Freshman outfielder Reece Longstaff is spending his first collegiate summer in Michigan, playing for the Michigan Monarchs of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League. In 11 games with the Monarchs, Longstaff is batting .342 with five doubles, a homer, and three runs batted in. Longstaff hit his first home run of the summer on June 17, going 3-for-3 with two doubles against the Lima Locos.

Freshman pitchers Brady Nelsen and Roger Rang are once against teammates this summer, both playing in Casper, Wyo. for the Casper Horseheads of the Independence League. Nelsen, a redshirt freshman from Oro Valley, has pitched six games for the Horseheads, making a pair of starts. Nelsen got off to a strong start, tossing a pair of scoreless innings in a relief appearance in a 14-8 win over the Gem City Bison on May 24. Rang has pitched in eight games while making three starts, striking out 34 batters in 30 innings pitched.

Pitcher Cooper Webb is playing for the Covington Lumberjacks in Covington, Va. In the Valley League. The Freshman from Spring City, Pa. has pitched in two games, both starts, striking out six batters and walking just two in 7.1 innings of work.

Freshman Ben Fiernezi and Chris Echavarria are both playing for the Hays Larks of the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Baseball League while both Roland Marte and Enmanuel Saint-Hilaire are playing with the Middlesex Expos of the Intercity League and Max Weller is suiting up for Moonshots Baseball in the rand Park League in his home state of Indiana.
