MESA, Ariz---Joseph Tavares struck out twelve in the seven inning game leading the Arizona Western Matadors (17-10 overall, 7-7 ACCAC) to a split of an ACCAC double-header with the GateWay Geckos (10-15 overall, 5-9 ACCAC) at Gene Autry Field Tuesday afternoon.
Tavares mowed down the Geckos in the opener, sitting down 12 batters via the K. The lone run he surrendered was unearned after a lead-off walk, error, and ground out combined to get the Geckos on the board.
By that point the Matadors already posted a three-run top of the second with Anthony Guzman and Jose Paula both deliving RBI hits.
Juan Salazar's two-run single opened things up in the fifth as apart of another three-run inning.
Delano Selassa added an RBI in the sixth to give the Mats a 7-1 win in game one.
The three-run inning worked against Arizona Western in game two, as the Geckos led 3-0 after the first.
GateWay piled on runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth to lead 7-0.
The Matadors scored two runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings but that's as close as they would come in a 7-4 loss.
Arizona Western will continue the long road trip at the Tucson Invitational this weekend.
