YUMA, Ariz. – Two strong starts neutralized Central Arizona as the Matadors swept the Vaqueros Saturday afternoon.
Chris Koeiman and Robert Gonzalez each tossed complete games as Arizona Western improves its record to 17-5 overall and 8-2 in the ACCAC.
In the first game of the double-header, the Matadors struck first with a pair of runs in the second. With the bases loaded, the Mats pushed one across on a fielder’s choice and then a wild pitch brought home Ramon Miranda.
After Central answered back with a run in the top of the third, the Mats engineered a double-steal of home to get a run back in the third.
Miranda then singled home Jarrod Belbin and scored on Christian Castellanos’ RBI double.
Koeiman maintained the advantage before running into trouble in the fifth. The Vaqueros strung together three straight singles to load the bases, the third of which bounced off of the fence, but the Matador outfield relayed the ball in quickly preventing a run.
Koeiman then bucked down earning a strike-out and inducing an inning-ending double-play to qwell the threat.
The final two frames proved smoother for Koeiman and the Mats en route to a 6-1 victory.
Game two saw the teams trade zeroes until the Matadors broke through in the fourth.
With the bases loaded, Justin Green came home on a wild pitch to open the scoring.
The Matadors would add two more in the sixth when Sammy Hackl singled to start the inning. Jarrod Belbin doubled home courtesy runner Arjun Huerta, and Belbin would eventually score on a passed ball.
Robert Gonzalez made all three of the runs last, spinning a complete game shutout while keeping the Vaqueros off the bases. Central managed just four hits off of Gonzalez and issued just one walk while striking out seven as the Mats run their win streak over the Vaqueros to eight straight games dating back to 2018.
Arizona Western improves to 17-5 on the season and 8-2 in ACCAC play. Central Arizona falls to 13-8 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
The Matadors are home on Tuesday afternoon hosting Yavapai for a double-header on Kammann Field beginning at Noon.
