COOLIDGE, Ariz. – A five run sixth netted the Arizona Western Matadors (12-8 overall, 3-5 ACCAC) a split of Saturday’s double-header against the #12 Central Arizona Vaqueros (15-5-2 overall, 8-2 ACCAC).
Arizona Western starter Devin Contreras surrendered a single run in the second and the score remained 1-0 into the sixth.
But Arizona Western got to Mat Olsen, the Vaqueros starter in the sixth. After Delano Selassa was hit by a pitch, Juan Salazar’s single put runners on second and third thanks to an error on the play.
JC Navarro promptly tied the game with an RBI single. Three walks ended up forcing in two runs before Daniel Gonzalez delivered a two-run single, making it 5-1.
Central got another run in the bottom of the inning and chased Contreras, but Darrell Woodall closed out the final inning and a third for the 5-2 Matador win.
In game two, the Vaqueros struck for three runs against Raleigh Pelkonen in the first four innings.
Jose Paula’s RBI double in the fifth and an unearned run in the seventh pulled Arizona Western close, but Central Arizona held onto the 3-2 score for the split.
Arizona Western is back at home Tuesday hosting Yavapai College for a double-header beginning at Noon.
