THATCHER, Ariz---A three run second and four run sixth helped the Arizona Western Matadors (9-6 overall, 1-3 ACCAC) cruise to a game one win before splitting with the Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters (9-7 overall, 1-3 ACCAC) Tuesday afternoon.
Oliver Frias' two-run double opened the scoring before an RBI groundout gave the Matadors all the runs they would need in the second inning.
The Matadors added a four-spot in the sixth benefitting from a few walks, a wild pitch and Anthony Guzman's 2 RBI single.
Elvis Parra tossed five innings, allowing just two runs, to pick up the win for Arizona Western with a 7-2 final.
In game two, the Mats scored a pair of runs in the second on a pair of sacrifices to go up 2-0.
But free bases, including a hit batter, allowed Eastern to put up four runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-2 lead.
The Matadors tied the game with two runs in the fifth, but Eastern scored six runs over their final three at-bats in the sixth, seventh and eigth, ultimately pulling away 10-7 from Arizona Western.
Arizona Western continues on the road Saturday to take on GateWay for a double-header beginning at Noon.
