YUMA, Ariz---Strong Pitching propelled the Arizona Western Matadors (9-3 overall, 1-1 ACCAC) all day long but one bad inning led to a split of the ACCAC opening double-header with the Pima Aztecs (6-2 overall, 1-1 ACCAC) Saturday afternoon at Kammann Field.

In a pair of games that left little margin for error, AWC was solid for the first 14 innings of the day.

Joseph Taveras set the tone in game one, mowing down the Pima offense over the first three innings, holding the Aztecs without a base-runner the first time through the order.

Samuel Fabian's ground-rule double provided the first run of the day for either team, giving AWC a 1-0 lead in the fourth.

But Pima strung together three hits in the fifth, tying the game on Bailey Seeger's flare to center.

Despite missing some opportunities earlier in the inning, Benito Garcia's triple to the right-center field gap setup up Jarrod Belbin's RBI knock and the Matadors added another insurance run for Taveras.

The right-hander closed the door for his 2nd win of the season, as the Matadors took the ACCAC opener 3-1.

Game two had a different pace throughout as every run seemed to come at a premium. Tied 3-3 after five and the exit of both starters. Garcia started another rally with a double and Belbin singled, before a passed ball brough Garcia home. Weller than belted a ground-rule double to give the Mats a 5-3.

Reliever Francisco Gonzalez was solid for the next two innings but exited after a six straight balls to start the eighth. Darrell Woodall entered with Pima trying to lay down a bunt, but an appeared failed attempt that hit Daniel Durazo was ruled a hit by pitch to load the bases.

Terrel Huggins unloaded a grand-slam to give the Aztecs the 7-5 lead.

Juan Cerda entered and calmed things for the Matadors, but Kaden Palmer was equally stifling on the Pima side, holding the Matadors scoreless for the final 2.1 innings for the win.

The Matadors will be back in action on Tuesday, hosting Eastern Arizona for a double-header at Noon. Fans are permitted with masks and social distancing mandatory.

The games will be streamed on the Matador Athletics Facebook Page-free of charge.
