GLENDALE, Ariz. – Chris Koeiman and Robert Gonzalez each tossed seven strong innings and the offense provided support in the Matadors double-header sweep of the Glendale Gauchos Saturday afternoon.
Chris Koeiman was brilliant again for the Matadors tossing his second straight complete game in AWC’s 1-0 victory in game one.
Koeiman struck out eight while not allowing a run for the fourth time this season.
The Matador offense provided a timely run in the top of the seventh. Justin Greene singled to start the inning and stole second. Greene advanced to third on Jarrod Belbin’s single.
Ramon Miranda laid down a perfect bunt single to push across Greene.
Koeiman navigated around a one out single to grab the victory.
Arizona Western jumped in front early, capitalizing on a two-out error to score Carlos Arellano from second.
The Mats got three more in the second as Anthony Guzman doubled home a run. AWC got Christian Castellanos home on a wild pitch and Guzman scored on a misplayed ground ball to cap the inning.
That was enough cushion for Robert Gonzalez who allowed bookended a single earned run in the fourth with a trio of scoreless frames. Gonzalez finished the day with the Mats leading 5-1 after seven innings of work while striking out eight Gauchos.
Miranda singled home Greene in the seventh to widen the lead before the Matadors piled on in the eighth. The big hit in the inning was Belbin’s two run double that played Zach Huffins and Arellano.
The offense tacked on two more in the ninth to make it a 10-2 final in game two.
The Mats improve to 19-4 with the two wins and 10-4 in ACAC play. Arizona Western is on the road Wednesday to start the Tucson Invitational against Minot State.
Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma.
