BSB: Bats Unload for Split at Eastern

THATCHER, Ariz. –The offense responded with 17 runs after another pitcher’s duel went against the Arizona Western Matadors in a split with the Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters Saturday.

A solo home run in the second inning by Dalton Bishop off of Matador Starter Gabe Ponce was the difference in game one.

Arizona Western scattered four hits against Tucker Knight who kept the Matadors off of the scoreboard to secure the 1-0 win for the Gila Monsters.

Game two was more in doubt as the teams exchanged leads over the first six innings.

A pair of homers by the Gila Monsters Kairos Torres-Umi were enough to chase Matador starter Ramon Miranda after the third inning.

But the Matador offense tied the game in the fourth sparked by Justin Greene’s lead-off homer. Tyson Zamora also singled home a run in the inning.

The Gila Monsters regained the lead in the fifth with a run against reliever Chris Koeiman.

The Matador offense took over in the sixth thanks to a two-run homer from Arjun Huerta.

AWC would add a run in the seventh on a wild pitch before a three run homer by Sammy Hackl in the eighth made the score 9-4.

The offense added eight more in the ninth inning on the strength of six hits as Robert Gonzalez finished off the final two innings on the mound to secure the 17-5 win for the Matadors.

Arizona Western moves to 35-17 on the season and 20-14 in conference play.

The Matadors remain on the road for a crucial conference showdown with the Pima Aztecs Tuesday in Tucson beginning at Noon.
