Baseball comes up short twice at Pima

YUMA, Ariz. - The Arizona Western Matadors (43-11, 27-9) were swept in a doubleheader at Pima (35-17, 20-14) losing game one 2-1 before falling in game two 4-2 on Saturday afternoon in Tucson.

Pima scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Matadors could not hold on to their early lead, losing game one 2-1. 

The Matadors opened the scoring with a single run in the top of the first inning when JC Navarro drove in the lone Matadors' run in the contest, giving the Matadors a 1-0 lead.

Joseph Taveras allowed two runs over the course of six innings, striking out four in a loss. 

Max Weller led the Matadors with three hits, going 3-for-4 while Ben Fierenzi picked up a pair of hits, finishing the opener 2-for-3. 

Just like in game one, the Matadors jumped to an early lead but Pima used a pair of two-run innings to come from behind and finish off the sweep with a 4-2 win in game two.

The Matadors scored a run in each of the first and second innings to jump out to a 2-0 lead before Pima scored two runs in the fifth to tie the game and then took a 4-2 lead with a pair of runs in the seventh inning. 

Wesley Estrella finished the game with three hits, going 3-for-4 with an RBI while Weller ended the day with a two-hit game, going 2-for-4. Noah Marcelo produced the lone extra-base hit for the Matadors, doubling in a 1-for-5 performance. 

The Matadors finish off the regular season on Tuesday, heading to Douglas to meet Cochise in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
