YUMA, Ariz. – Some nights just don’t go your way. The 20th ranked Arizona Western College women’s soccer team outshot Mesa Community College 17-5 but wound up on the wrong side of the scoreboard. The Lady Mats lost 1-0 on Thursday night in Yuma.
Mesa scored in the 25th minute. Destiny Cross found space just outside the 18-yard box on a counter. A pass split the Lady Matador defense, and Casillas slipped the ball past a diving Janet Reyes to make it 1-0.
The Lady Mats had a variety of chances to tie the match but simply couldn’t find the back of the net. Abby Rosales had a pair of free kicks that sailed over and wide from 25 yards out, and the team had the ball bounce through the six yard box dangerously. Arizona Western finished with nine shots on goal while Mesa only had one.
AWC drops to 9-4 overall and in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference. Mesa improves to 5-6-1 overall and in the ACCAC.
The Lady Mats close out the week by hosting South Mountain Community College on Saturday. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm. Tickets are only $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and military members. Children under 12 and AWC students and staff (with current school ID) get in for FREE!
