YUMA, Ariz. – A deep and talented Arizona Western College men’s basketball team won a share of the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference title for the first time since 2008-09. The Mats had a pair of players earn All-Conference honors. Andre Jones was named the Freshman of the Year as well as being put on the All-ACCAC and All-Region I First Teams. Torin Webb was named to the All-ACCAC Second Team and All-Region I First Team.
Jones finished the year as the team’s second leading scorer at 13.7 points per game. As a rugged 6’6, 235 pound freshman, Jones was almost unstoppable in transition and slashing to the rim. He added 5.6 rebounds per game and helped the Matadors finish as one of the best offensive rebounding teams in the conference. He scored at least 10 points 20 times this season and was a consistent offensive threat all year. Jones was also named the ACCAC Division I Player of the Week once during the season.
Webb was one of the most consistent offensive players all season for AWC. The sophomore from Temecula, Cali. led the team with 14.9 points per game and scored a career best 30 points against Chandler-Gilbert on February 25. He had at least 10 points in 24 games, and he hit multiple three’s 21 times. The 6’2 guard also led the team with 1.7 steals per game as part of an active, opportunistic group. Webb was named the ACCAC Division I Player of the Week once as well.
The Matadors (24-6 overall, 27-5 ACCAC) hold the top seed in the Region I Tournament which begins on Saturday. AWC hosts Central Arizona College at 7:30 pm. No passes will be accepted for the game, and tickets are $5.
Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma. AWC leads the state in enrollment growth over the past 10 years and handed out more than 2,400 certificates and degrees in 2015-16.
